Updating the unit has been a pain but with a little know how isn't hard. It is worth the money especially at the price offered now. Good luck finding anything much better. Customer Review Best Customer Review : *Note* This is an older generation product. Just reviewing now because I forgot... First Impressions: Like all high wattage AV receivers, its big and imposing. For those of small or petite frame, you'll want two people to handle this. It's sleek black (in my case, silver is also an option) exterior looks menacing just sitting there. But its not meant to be a weight for your AV cabinet... Pros: Can't beat the price (if you find it new) for the wattage. Its signal processors are quite nice, not the best money can buy, but enough to earn it the coveted THX certification. Most recreational home theater folks probably wont notice. It offers three zone speaker driving (2 channel in 2 and 3). This means that you can have it in your home theater/living room with the speakers there, but also have speakers out on your patio and somewhere else, all powered by this unit (but you do go down to 5.1 surround if you use zone 3). As far as connectivity, its got quite a few on the back, and at the time of release, alot of HD options (3 HDMI, 3 Component), and the requisite mix of s-video and composite for the older devices. Pre-outs on the audio allow for a second system in another room, or if 1200 watts are not enough for you, to feed into a second amplifier. Cons: Well, some of the stuff in the 'Pros' are now almost cons. The 3 HDMI, while being 1.3a compliant (Deep Black level signal), 3 almost just doesn't cut it these days. Cable/Satellite, DVD, and one game system, and you're done - out of HDMI ports. If you happen to only have one or two devices that run HDMI and you don't expect to get any for at least several years, then this shouldn't be a huge detractor for you, but if you have the money, find the newer generations of these with 4+ ports for future compatibility. The 805 also lacks slightly in the up scaling department - taking a composite/s-video signal and outputting it through the HDMI. Newer receivers will process the signal and scale it up to full HD resolution (but not necessarily quality), while this doesn't. It will still send the signal, but you don't get the benefit of full 1080p processing. It does send it out over the HDMI cable, and you do get some picture improvement, but again not like the newer generations. Overall: Well, if you're looking for a relatively inexpensive option for powering your 5.1 or 7.1 surround system with a couple of HD devices, this will do it for you. But if your looking for an up-to-date receiver that will be future proof for at least a couple more years, then look to the newer generation. It's still of great quality, its just getting out-paced by the younger, newer receivers. Now, after two years, its 3 HDMI (the gold standard) ports seem underwhelming. Many people have or will have three or more devices that will fill this up. Customer Review 2 : Great product, TERRIBLE customer service - Brian D. Rubeling - Baltimore, MD USA If I had to provide a rating on just the product I would give the receiver 5 stars. It is powerful and full of features at a very reasonable price. However after dealing with Onkyo customer service recently I cannot recommend this, or any other Onkyo product to anyone. To me a great product means nothing without decent customer service to back it up. For the first year I only used the receiver for audio and was very pleased with the crisp clean sound the unit produced. Once I started to use the receiver for video as well I noticed a problem. The receiver was having issues with the HDMI output and was distorting the colors as the signal passed through. I took the receiver to my local Onkyo repair shop and they determined that the HDMI board had to be replaced. A month after my receiver went into the shop I contacted the shop to get an update and they said they were waiting for the part. Another month passed and I contacted the shop again and they were still waiting for the part. Once the part came in the repair only took 2 days. I was without my receiver for 2 months for a repair that took 2 days! I contacted Onkyo shortly after to express my displeasure with the delay in service. I had attempted to contact Onkyo twice during the time my unit was in the shop. I received no response until I actually sent a letter to Onkyo headquarters. I then had the pleasure of dealing with their National Service Manager Jack Cooper (please note the sarcasm). Mr. Cooper was unsympathetic to my concerns and did not seem to think it was unacceptable that my unit was gone so long for a simple 2 day repair. No attempt was made to accommodate me for the delay or even to assure me that it would not happen again. I attempted to send a letter to the President of Onkyo, Mr. Araki, to express my displeasure with my customer service, however the letter just ended up with Mr. Cooper in customer service, so that looks like a losing battle. The bottom line is this is a great receiver and if you never have to deal with customer service then you will be very happy with this product. Although the fact that the HDMI board was backordered and took 2 months to receive leads me to believe that this is a common problem with the receiver and you probably will eventually have to deal with customer service. If you do not mind waiting 2 months for even the simplest repairs then go ahead. When I buy a product quality customer service is very important to me and I have learned not to expect that from Onkyo. Needless to say I will not buy another Onkyo product and will gladly pay extra to deal with a more respectable company. I would strongly advise you to consider one of the many other receiver manufacturers out there. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I had been looking for an amplifier for a couple of months to satisfied my reborn interest in vinyl which was sparked with the Audio-Technica AT-PL120 I purchased earlier this year. I had originally bought the AT to digitize my old albums many of which were not available on CD but most importantly, the cost of replacing so many records (..so little time). On my way to all digital, something funny happened. I was suddenly reminded of how pleasant analog is/was. I began to play all my old records and after putting a couple to cd I stopped and just started listening to them. Like I use to do back in paleolithic times. Of course after hearing what was I soon wanted what could be. An analog lovers plight. Black Hole would actually be more apt. First step replace the OEM cartridge to a Shure M97xE. Next upgrade to the Music Hall P1.2 phono preamplifier. Next a new turntable mat-I made my own out of cork and Sorbothane. Much better, for about three months. Something was missing. I needed a new amp. I was getting ready to spend about 00 for a power amplifier. I looked up the usual suspects; Adcom, NAD, Parasound, Rotel and newcomer Vincent. I would use the amp in conjunction with my A/V receiver, the Yamaha RX-V663 which I would use as a preamp. It has pre-outs for its main and surround channels. But then I read Stereophiles Recommended Components for 2009. And there amongst 0,0000 turntables,,000 tonearms, ,000 cartridges and ,000 mono block power amplifiers was the Onkyo A-9555, list price:0. What's up with this? I did some more research. And then some more research. I was about to go down to J@R Music World to listen to it, but when they put it on sale for just over 0, I pounced on it like Kirstie Alley on a Big Mac. I figured I could always return it and I could listen to it in my listening room with my own speakers! I know from experience that any audio gear needs time to break in, but if what I heard is a sign 'Of Things To Come', punch my ticket and beam me up Scotty. How sweet it is!(Now I'm getting carried away, sorry about that). But seriously (Airplane anyone?), This amp is fantastic. The overall sound is rich, warm and tube like. Not really tube but tube-like. Almost like my old Fisher 500-C all-tube tube receiver, yet with a more robust powerful bass. The bass is not as tight as as more expensive amps but tight bass and a tight wallet never did go well together. But considering its price point it is full and bloomy yet you can here the individual strings as they are plucked. As others have mentioned the highs do roll of a bit so system matching is a must. If your system leans towards the lush already adding more greenery will only make it harder to tell the forest from the trees. I found that the Audio-Technica AT-440MLa, a bright-some say overly bright-cartridge works for me. As for digiatl audio the Onkyo takes away some of the high frequency shrill I find so annoying in many (most?) CDs. All-in-all a sweet heart of an amplifier with a fairly deep and wide soundstage and excellent imaging. Highly recommended! Two thumbs up and a bag of chips. By-the-way I've always found Ms. Alley to be and extremely beautiful women. No matter what size. It seems this amp is very impressive at this price range. I got the refurbished version for 450 dollars only. So I would say it is 5 star for this price. I own Onkyo 605 and 606, Wharfedale 9.5 and 9.6. This amp obviously produce better and clearer sound. You will definately hear more details than before. A good cable is a must buy. I used Monsters M850i(about 40 dollars). It substantially improved the sound quality comparing to a normal cable. I still doubt why the amp doesn't provide a digital input since CD is already digitalized. Or these companies just want to get more money from selling over priced CD palyer and audio cables!! |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : I bought this system for my home theater and I love it. My media room already had four speakers (two front and two rear) flush mounted in the walls, but I wanted to buy a full Home Theater in a Box (HTiB) to get the other speakers for full surround. I also planned to hook this system up to a PS3 for Blu-Ray playback. Most HTiB systems come with a receiver that has built a built in DVD player. I didn't want to get a wasted DVD that way. Also, those systems have very few input options. What I loved about this box is what you see of the images of the back. This receiver has all kinds input so I had no problem connecting the cable, PS3, and PS2 plus I could connect a few other game boxes if I wanted. The sound is remarkable. I'm often tempted to play the THX intro on movies over and over again just because it sounds so good across the whole range. High pitches are well produced and you can literally feel the bass. The self-configuring option is simple to do and works really well. Some people will note the minor drawback that the HDMI audio is only a pass through and you have to use other cables to connect the audio. Yes, this leads to buying two extra optical audio cables and makes the setup a tiny bit harder, but I didn't find it to be all that much of a challenge and the result was well worth it. As a last note, Onkyo packages this well. The UPS guy literally rolled the box up to my house and the Styrofoam packaging got crushed in some places, but it did its job and protected all the components which were in perfect shape. Sometimes it'll 'pop' pretty loud when kicking into Dolby PLII, otherwise the sound is great as I can expect with Infinity TSS-1200 speakers. Just a warning: The problems with this receiver come when you use the HDMI for video pass through. Touchy, I've swapped HDMI cables several times and they'll still lose signal if moved the slightest bit, they need to sit just right it seems, also for some reason using converters with DVI to a cable box or laptop bugs out a lot. Note that the HDMI only passes through only video and not from any other sources, so the only use is 2 HDMI inputs & 1 output. I thought this had upconversion video to 720p, which maybe it does, but if it does it seems it would only do so for HDMI, none of this can be linked to an input from component cables or optical audio (which is obvious I suppose considering the HDMI is ONLY video). In any case, I gave up & use optical audio & then just plug the HDMI directly to the TV for video, works perfect, just makes you have to change TV/Video on the TV as well as the receiver, which isn't what I wanted to do. Customer Review 2 : Impressive features and easy setup, but has a persistent hum - T. Mackay - I was impressed by the features of this receiver, especially the 3 hdmi inputs, and the ease of setting it up. Still, there was a persistent hum in every speaker. After talking with the very helpful support at OneCall (the vendor) I plugged the sub-woofer into a 2 prong adapter (that's right, I eliminated the ground!) - that eliminated the buzz in the sub-woofer. Then I moved the receiver plug into a power strip where none of the components were plugged in; that reduced the speaker hum to an almost inaudible level (which I could have lived with). Unfortunately I was then able to hear a low persistent buzz coming from the receiver itself. I have given up on this receiver and am sending it back. I'm going to try a Yamaha model - it's more expensive and has only two hdmi inputs but I've had good luck with Yamaha in the past so I'll try it again. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : When my Sony digital decoder started going south I started looking for a receiver. I was debating between this Onkyo and a similarly priced Yamaha when the Sony finally bit the bullet. The Yamaha was out of stock so I took the Onkyo. This is a fine little receiver that gets the job done well in my small room powering my Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 speaker system. I did have to pump the center channel up 3db as my middle aged ears are losing some of their midrange. In this price range I don't think you can go wrong with this. Plenty of understated power, good sound fields and enhancements, very nice sound. If you don't need HDMI this is a good choice. A couple of caveats however. The remote is not a universal and only works with other Onkyo components. The speaker terminals are smaller than expected and could really be a bit bigger. Also, while it doesn't bother me, the speaker protection relays are a bit loud when they click in. While I've read of others saying their unit got hot, mine does not. It runs quite a bit cooler then my ancient Sony receiver. If you need a budget 5.1 receiver, this is a fine choice. Customer Review 1 : great receiver - A. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I purchased the 605 because I was on a budget and could not afford a better sounding HT receiver. That said, this is a great product at 0. With some looking, you may be able to pick it up for far lower. Some of the earlier 605 models had HDMI pass through/switching issues, but my model works great sending a 1080p signal from my PS3. I am a picky audiophile, so I do not recommend music on this. For movies, this thing blows it up. I have paradigm Titans up front with a PSB center channel (pretty modest gear but it can take a beating), an old Paradigm PS1000 sub, and some old Polk wedge speakers in back. I can really ratchet the volume and the 605 keeps pumping it out giving my speakers everything they can handle. I only wish it had 1080p upconversion, but that's not a big deal for me since my PS3 already upconverts all my DVDs. The ability to use the 6 and 7 channels to bi-wire is a nice touch - wish I had better speakers for it. The back panel uses quality terminals and offers plenty of options to assign digital inputs. I find the interface somewhat cumbersome at times. I have to make several adjustments just to listen to a 2 channel audio track, for example. It assumes I want to use DSP which is a complete bastardization of the original track, in my opinion. Overall, I recommend this product for the price. Because the unit was under warranty, I sent it to be repaired by one of Onkyo's authorized repair facilities. They took 3 months to get it back to me and when I reconnected the unit it only lasted ONE day before it broke again for the same reason--no audio. Onkyo's customer service and management does not care about providing any type of customer service and I would not recommend purchasing any Onkyo products. I trashed this unit and purchased a Yamaha to replace it. If buying any Onkyo product buyer beware!!! Customer Review 2 : Lasted nine months - Odieslippers - Philly, PA I purchased the silver SR-605 and started using it in a simple home theater setup in November 2008. It performed fairly well at first, but maybe I only thought that because it was my first attempt at building a 7.1 channel system. The unit does run very hot and needs external cooling unless you want to risk a fire. It was lightly used, maybe twice a week and never pushed to its limits as I live in a townhouse. About nine months into using it with no signs of problems, it started to pulse loudly through the sub woofer and right rear surround channels to the point where damage to the speakers was inevitable. I took it to a reputable repair shop where they told me the digital board was fried and needed to be replaced. Only problem is that Onkyo will not sell that part; they insist on doing the repair themselves. Next problem: the closest "authorized" repair shop is not located in the same state that I live in. Unimpressed with its performance, I declined footing the bill for shipping it, waiting months for them to work on it and return it and instead have moved on to a quality product that won't burn my house down. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I have never written a review on Amazon but I felt this needed to be delt with. I had trouble with this tuner receiving both XM radio and HD radio. I actually returned one unit in exchange for another and the problem continued. After listening to XM radio the tuner was unable to decode the HD signal. My phone calls to both XM radio and Onkyo were unrevealing and terribly unhelpful. Both companies hit a new low in providing useless information. After experimenting I found that my roof antenna was putting out TOO STRONG a signal and probably over loading the tuning circuits. I added a 3dB attenuator and the problem was solved. The unit has excellent sound and makes the best of the compressed formats on XM and HD radio. But beware, you antenna may actually be too good. Another quirk is that you have to press a button to find out what is being played rather than the information appearing automatically. Customer Review 1 : Terrible customer service - Phillip J. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I got this to replace an old Kenwood HTiB from the pre-HDMI days and was blown away. The options provided are basically overkill. It has more inputs than I'm likely to need, despite being a retrogamer, auto level-matching and excellent sound quality. It can also rescale most anything with its on-board video processing. It can decode anything, has 7.1 sound and is quite the looker, if a bit hefty. You have a lot of options as to what input corresponds to what. Basically, the S-video is fixed, but you can assign the component, hdmi and optical and coaxial audio inputs to whatever you want, so you can, for instance, run a Wii and a PS3 on one input. It would be hard to fill this baby up. Their are only a handful of cons: -You can't do both two zones and 7.1 as there aren't enough speaker connections -It's a bit of a pain to change the output resolution and you are limited in your options. For instance, if you set the upscaler to 4:3 mode, it will squish 1080i and 720p content to 4:3 as well, so you'll have to go in and change this frequently if you are using it, but it involves a lot of flipping through menus. Ideally, you shoudl be abel to set it to scale 480p content and not 720p, 1080i, 1080p, etc. -I would have like a TV tuner in here. I don't know why these aren't standard features on receiver. But I must say even before that, the sound was great and lots of power while controlled and well behaved. The HD formats have superb clarity, you can heard almost the smallest detail unheard of before in DD and DTS. It is slightly more powerful than my 110W Yamaha 6.1 amp before, upscaling is very good and the picture looks very good on my 120Hz tv. So far I have tried my BD, DVR, portable dvd, and laser disc player on it. All upscale without a problem. I do not have the heat problem which some other people noticed. The only draw back for me, is sometimes I want to just use the speaker on my TV for say BD player, and not turn on my amp, right now there is no way to do that, even with the pass through HDMI feature - turn on TV audio out. Still you will have to turn on the amp, and set the TV audio out on.....later switch it back off.....just a lot of work.... I like my silver unit. |
