Onkyo TXSR603B 7.1 Channel Surround Receiver Features
Onkyo TXSR603B 7.1 Channel Surround Receiver Overviews Representing a new generation of Onkyo A/V receiversThe TX-SR603X brings you both stellar home theater performance and access to satellite radio through XM. Revolutionizing radio through innovative, commercial-free programming, XM Satellite Radio (sold separately) is best delivered through the precisely engineered, powerfully amplified TX-SR603X. With Powered Zone 2, you get the best of both worlds - engaging surround home theater in one room with a different , two-channel source (such as XM Satellite Radio programs, MP3s or Audio CDs) distributed to another. You can also take advantage of the onboard Auto Speaker Set-up with Microphone system to calibrate your speakers for the best possible sound from the listening position of your choice. Furthermore the TX-XS603X is easily integrated with all of your other components including the iPod through the optional DS-A1 thanks to the TX-SR603X's innovative Remote Interactive capability. Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've owned this receiver for about 3 months now. Inputs/outputs: ample; covers RCA, optical, coaxial, s-video, composite video, component video. I like video signals from different inputs is converted to component output so that I can view say my camcorder connected to the video input in front on my TV which is connected to the component output. Remote: Quite user friendly and the macros work with some flaws. For example, the remote does not remember your system state, so if you setup a macro to listen to music using your receiver and DVD player, then if trigger a second macro to watch DVDs on your TV, receiver, and DVD player, it will not remember that your DVD player and receiver are already on. I fixed that by getting a Harmony Remote that rocks. Speaker connects - I like the color coded connectors on the rear panel and also that Onkyo gives you stickers to tag your cables with L, R, LS, RS, C etc. Zone 2 - not used Audio Setup: The auto setup using the included mic is pretty cool. I used my camera's tripod to place the mic at ear-height on my couch and it provide enough input to the receiver to adjust relative levels across speakers as well as the equalization. The only error it made was, it thought my rear surrounds Polk R15 were large speakers. I overrid that later. Sound quality and power: I'm using this receiver with 5 speakers and no subwoofer (Polk R50 fronts, R15 rears and Infinity Entra 2 Center). The sound is excellent. Still don't miss the sub. I tried the Onkyo TX-SR503 before this and that's a great receiver too. I exchanged it for the 603 in order to get the video conversion and the auto setup. Customer Review 1 : Terrific bargain - Jeffrey A. Sherman - Broomfield, CO USA This unit is no longer available directly from retailers, which is good and bad. It is bad because it is a very nice, full-featured receiver that had a very reasonable MSRP. It is good because it is often available used or through resellers at deep discount prices. When paired with a good universal remote like one of the units from Harmony, this receiver makes a terrific centerpiece for a reasonably priced home theater. It is a significant improvement in performance from "home theaters in a box," but much cheaper than many receivers with HDMI inputs. Customer Review 2 : The perfect home theater unit! - T. Malitis - Pa This Onkyo was a step up over my Sony Theater in a Box. All I can say is the difference is amazing. The unit comes with its own mic to set up the speaker levels. If you are not a tech person don't worry the instructions are easy to follow. The important thing with this unit is the wattage is constant to the speakers. This was important because my last unit blew a set of infinities. This happened because the wattage was not constant with the sony so during quiet scenes the wattage would fall then something would happen and the speakers would get a surge of power. Poof their goes my speakers. Anyways for the money you will not find a better unit. Oh if you are a person who needs HDMI imputs you might want to look at the newer versions that have more of those imputs. |

Onkyo TX-DS797 Surround Sound Receiver Overviews Turn your home into a digital theater with OnkyoM-^Rs 6.1-channel digital surround receiver. Not only is it equipped with enough inputs and outputs for the most elaborate systems, but it has plenty of high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth power to fill even large entertainment rooms. Also, the multi-room capability lets you have music in any room in your home! Customer Review Best Customer Review : After doing a ton of research to find the right receiver for me, I decided on this one - in favor of the competing Denon and Harmon Kardon receivers. Onkyo gets 5 out of 5 for the feature set. Onkyo certainly did its homework before developing this piece of amazing hardware. This receiver can handle almost any audio format available today (Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, DTS-ES 6.1) and has several DSP features like Dolby PL II, Neo:6, and more. This receiver has connectivity features that would satisfy even the demanding users. It has more than enough video (S-Video as well as component video) and audio inputs, including one for turntables! Further, 3 optical digital audio inputs, 3 coaxial digital audio inputs and 1 optical digital output make sure that you can connect every device to it using the digital connectors. It also features pre-outs for all 7.1 channels, which makes it easy to upgrade your home theater system, should you wish to move on. The built-in amps are powerful with 100 watts per channel (100 x 6 watts) with 8 ohm speakers (the most usual speaker impedence). This should be sufficient for most medium sized rooms upto about 300 sq feet (assuming you like to listen real loud). Sound quality is amazing, and it works its magic equally well on 2-channel as well as multi-channel sound inputs. Being THX-certified, you would have high expectations with its sound and picture quality, and take my word for it, you will not be disappointed! The superior OSD is clear and very easy to navigate through. The remote control is a bit large, but its capabilities are amazing. The remote is lighted and has functions for programming macros and for programming individual buttons from buttons on other remote controllers. All in all, this THX-certified receiver has all that any home theater aficionado could ask for. all around recommended by someone who has previewed over a dozen receivers in past 3 years. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : This is my first review and my first reciever. I am amazed at the easy setup of this system. Although I am technically skilled, although not a pro, I expected the setup to be a little more difficult. This was my first home theatre after all. But it was a synch. And the GUI was outstanding. For a listener at my level the audyssey setup worked wonders. I am truly impressed with the quality and functionality of this unit. I have not made my way through all of the options, but using the upscaling feature on my Wii is great. One issue I have run into is while changing television channels (directv) if you have the cable/satellite box set to native resolution, everytime there is a resolution change and you are upscaling to 1080p the system will go black and then switch (with an audible pop). It is not that large of an inconvenience since I mostly use the onscreen tv guide to find a channel switch but it could be if you are used to just hitting channel up and down. Customer Review 1 : Plume of smoke - Mark Featherston - McAlester, OK I bought the unit back in Oct but I didn't set it up until Dec as that was when I bought my new plasma tv. The unit worked great, excellent picture good sound, for about an hour and half at which time the sound cut out. I tried all the troubleshooting steps listed in the instructions to no avail. I contacted Onkyo and they said I'd have to send it to an authorized repair store on my dime but that it was still under warranty so the repairs would be free and the repair shop would ship it back to me for free. All that took place though the repair shop called me twice to let me know they were ordering new parts so it ended up taking around a month to get the unit back. Got it hooked it up again and again I was happy with the pic and sound then after using it for around three hours then, while watching the blu-ray of Amadeus during the Don Giovanni scene, the sound cuts out again and a plume of smoke rose from the unit. So I'll be on the phone with Onkyo and probably the repair shop on Monday (Sunday now) to see whats what. I realize I'm probably just unlucky and have a especially poorly constructed unit but I can't recommend this unit. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : My background: I was a high end audio salesman for 2 years. I sold Meridian, B&W, B&O, Marantz, Mac, Adcom, Denon etc. I have heard many, many speakers on many different amplifiers and receivers. My equipment: Onkyo 707, Polk Monitor 70's, Kef Q55, Polk RT55b, Energy Sub and Boston Acoustics HD5 Pros: HDMI works very well, the picture is somewhat dark however there are adjustments on the707. Xbox and Comcast pass perfectly. On screen display is very nice. The physical front display is very nice and the receiver looks great on the rack. The sound quality is very good, mind you not great. But for the price paid this is a bargain. There are a tremendous wealth of sound fields and DSP to choose from. The buttons on the remote are laid out for Music, Movies, Gaming and THX. A very nice touch and ease of use. You can mix Dolby Digital, Dolby Height and THX in one sound field; VERY NICE! Audessy setup works very well; requires a few tweaks but otherwise nice feature. Audessy dynamic volume works great. No more jumping for the remote to turn down commercials. THIS OPTION ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS RECEIVER! Cons: On screen display is only in white. When a light of white background is being displayed you cannot see the on screen. Onkyo a chance to change the color of text would be very nice. The unit runs VERY HOT even at normal listening. Onkyo please install a FAN!!! You cannot adjust the speaker levels without losing the signal. It is very difficult to change speaker levels, EQ etc. without the sound??? My old 600 would allow a simple one button push to change settings and levels. The remote NEEDS a light. While it works fantastic the labels are squished and very, very difficult to see or use. I am very accustomed to memorizing remote layouts but this one is tough. The unit has an EQ option, you can set the EQ separately per set of speakers. I.E. Front, Front height, rear, sub etc. However it does not really work properly; 10db or - or + of 9 bands and barely hear the difference. Overall this is a very good product and capable. I am worried about the heat and possible problems in the future. I use AMEX that doubles the factory warranty FYI Customer Review 1 : Great receiver - KWS - Hilton Head SC I really like this receiver. I Replaced a high-end Yamaha receiver and the difference is significant. I believe the multEQ set up to balance the speakers was a major part. With the balance far exceeding what I had the clarity of my speakers is now enhanced, significantly. I had the need to advance to digital. I then went with the name, the reviews of others and price in order to make my decision to purchase the Onkyo TX-SR707. I bought through Amazon and was able to get a great price. I have had to call Onkyo for help. It sounded like the support was reading from the screen to help me, but I was happy some one was there to help. I was able to dope out my problems and now have an excellent sounding system. The receiver is adequate with sufficient inputs and outputs for most homes with a mixture of analog and digital equipment and when I do acquire more digital there is more than adequate HDMI hook ups. Sure it gets warm, no more than what I am use to. Yes I recommend this receiver. Customer Review 2 : Great Sound (When it works) - Chris from Norman, OK - Norman, OK I bought this unit and it was easy to set up and had great sound using 5 speakers and a sub. I used all HDMI from Blu-Ray and the Cable Box and then to the TV from the receiver. This Unit had trouble with the Cable Box and switching signal and sound types. Each time it made a loud popping noise and eventually it tripped the unit. From that point on it tripped ever time I turned it on and turned it up just a little. It even tripped on the Blu-Ray player after that point. I followed all the instructions on testing the unit by unplugging everything and turning it up all the way and then slowly tested each thing to make sure a speaker, sub or specific cable box was not tripping it (used other cable boxes). I did a hard reset on it twice then reprogrammed it. Onkyo's solution was to not use the HDMI which was the main reason I bought the unit so I tried using Digital Audio only and having the video signal go straight to the TV. It still tripped the unit. Could have had a lemon but I am not chancing it. I finally sent it back and I ordered a Yamaha. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : After reading lots of reviews on various receivers I found the Onkyo TX-SR507, and thought that it was finally the one to buy. I then decided to take a look at what I could possibly get for a bit more, and found the TX-SR607. Let me tell you the extra features on the 607 are worth the $[...]. First: Six (6) HDMI ports, including a front HDMI port. If I were to buy the 507, I would have filled all but one of the four HDMI ports. Leaving me very little room to upgrade in the future. The front HDMI port is also a perfect addition. I can connect my laptop easily and run slideshows or online videos. Even my compact digital camera has HDMI(mini) on it, perfect for showing new photos. Second: Analog to Digital video up-conversion. Even though my only analog component is a Nintendo Wii, connected via component video. However my TV is wall mounted, and the 607 allows me to run just a single HDMI cable from the receiver to my TV to carry all signals. This is far easier then running bulky component cables. The Up-conversion quality is pretty good, not the best I have seen, but again when the source video is 1/4 the output resolution you can never get perfection. Third: Automatic volume control. This is the feature that pushed me over the edge. Automatic volume control means no more super-loud TV ads, or changing channels and getting blasted by some overly loud broadcast. Note that Automatic volume control is NOT the same as dynamic compression. Dynamic compression dulls your audio by making both the quiet sounds louder, and the louder sound quieter. Automatic volume control preserves the full-range audio while still keeping the overall maximum volume in check. The TX-SR607 is short (depth wise) enough to easily connect everything and not have lots of wires crammed up behind it in a cabinet. The unit does get warm while operating, but never too hot to touch. It is fanless, so that means zero extra room noise. A trade-off I will take over a fan any day. The sound quality is great. I am using the system with all identical Polk speakers, and a 10" 100-watt subwoofer. The setup was painless and the automatic calibration worked wonders. My only request for improvement is to make more if the menu only functions accessible by remote, such as the night mode, or the auto volume level setting. Customer Review 1 : Hard to Beat... Lot of Bang for the Buck - J. Moritz - For a LR/FR home theater set up this is a great Receiver. It does everything as promised and it does it very well. You don't need a lot of power to drive most home theater speakers that are sold today. I use this unit in my Greatroom and I am very pleased with it. In my theater room which is a true home theater set-up I use the Onkyo 907 with 140 watts. Onkyo's do run on the warm side so be sure they are well ventilated. There are several sub 0 Receivers out there but I think that Onkyo gives you good quality for your money. Customer Review 2 : Good Value - S. Block - Houston, Texas Overall, this receiver is pretty good. I replaced a Denon AVR-2805 because I needed HDMI switching and upconversion. Pros: 1) The sound is much improved. The included microphone and auto-calibrate routine did a great job of optimizing the surround sound settings for our existing 5.1 speaker system. This is installed in a large open family room with wood floors, and I always had problems getting clear voices at low volumes in the past. It sounds great now! Cons: 1) No On-Screen-Display at 1080p. I was shocked at this. If I switch to 720p the volume OSD works fine. The "menu" screens will replace the video stream, there is no overlay. Also, the menu switches from 1080p to VGA output. This causes a large delay, and forces the TV to switch display formats. 2) No S-Video inputs. I used mostly S-video inputs on my old receiver. I had to re-wire all of my old (non-hdmi) sources with component video or downgrade to composite cables. |

Onkyo TX-NR3007 140 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Features
Onkyo TX-NR3007 140 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Overviews In one powerhouse unit, the TX-NR3007 combines the finesse and flexibility of a ballerina with the balance and brawn of a sumo wrestler. 9.2 audio channels expand the possibilities both for multi-zone playback and for the new surround dimensions of Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Advanced networking capability, meanwhile, lets you bring streaming internet radio and PC-based music files into your home entertainment set-up. Digital audio signals are converted by Onkyo’s VLSC into smooth, noiseless analog waveforms, while selected Audyssey and Dolby technologies maintain a well-balanced frequency response and dynamic range at any volume. Video processing on the TX-NR3007 is also second to none, with 1080p upscaling of any video source via HQV Reon-VX. To witness Onkyo’s renowned attention to build quality, check out the fully isolated power amp and pre-pro, along with the independent power supplies for system, video, and audio circuitry. In short, if you’re serious about building a home entertainment network on the firmest possible foundations, look no further than the TX-NR3007. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : I researched my AVR choice for months, read plenty of reviews, both pro and consumer, and settled on this one. There are several home theater forums as well that were very helpful- although realize that on any internet forum you tend to concentrate those who are having problems with the unit. People who don't have problems don't tend to say as much- and that goes for any product. For me, this thing works like a champ. I chose this over the 1007 for 1)better video processing (Reon chip), 2) independant power supplies (video/aduio/etc), and at the time, I found it for a great price, only a bit more than the 1007. It also has Dolby Dynamic volume, which the 1007 doesn't have- but I use the audyssey dynamic volume anyways. The backlit remote is nice too- although not a reason to buy this over the 1007. At first, I wasn't sure if the Reon chip was worth it, my projector suppossedly has the same chip, but I can tell a big difference upconverting my Dish 720p. The image looks much better when I let the Onkyo do the upconversion as oppossed to my projector. Likewise, it does a better job with DVD material compared to my BR which also upconverts DVDs, just not as well as the Onkyo. There are plenty of comprehensive reviews about all the many, many features this unit has. I'll let you research those. Compared to other brands, this seemed to have the most bang for the buck. No other 9.2 recievers in this price range. Few THX Ultra certified recievers in this price range. More HDMI inputs than anyone else. I currently have a 5.1 setup with high quality quadrapolar surrounds, and to be honest, I don't think I'll be getting rear surrounds any time soon. I will probably add height next. From everything I've read height makes more of an impact than rear surrounds. Plenty loud, plenty of headroom. Customizations out the wazoo. Audyssey microphone automatically sets up the unit for you. Mine runs warm, but after a full length movie with the sound cranked up it's not hot by any stretch. I don't use the net features, can't comment. So far I use it with my dish 622 box (HDMI), panasonic BR (HDMI), sanyo DVD (component), macbook (HDMI), airport express (optical) and hooked up to a samsung plasma (HDMI) and epson projector (HDMI) without any problems. Customer Review 2 : Awesome - John L. Pongrac - Idaho I just replaced a Pioneer Elite with this new Onkyo 9.2. This new Audessey DSX technology is awesome. I have all 11 speakers (Def Tech) hooked up plus 2 subs and I can tell you that the front high and front wide speakers do make a huge difference. If you have ever been to a place like the Hayden planetarium or maybe Epcot at Disney and experienced the sound at a show in a theme room there it's kind of like that. You cannot run both front high and front wide pairs at the same time unless you don't use rear surrounds. I find that using the front highs are best with movies and games and the front wides are better with music. And 2 subs give me a break! You don't have to have all speakers you can stick with 5.1 or 7.1 if you like. Then later on you have the option to add speakers. There are so many sound modes with speaker configurations to play with and they all sound good. The remote is better then I expected. It looks good and feels good is backlit and has macros. Macros allow you to shut off all you components with one button. This also hooks up to the internet and listening to Pandora through Ethernet sounds great. I read a foreign review that said compared to a Yamaha receiver he was disappointed at the sound. This is not a fair or accurate comparison because this receiver has many tweaking adjustments such as crossover cutoffs for each speaker. You can set it up to match your optimum speaker sound. I can tell you that if you buy this receiver matched with Def Tech Speakers you won't be disappointed. |

Customer Review 1 : Just don't try to use all the features - Scott T. Dunbar - Superior, CO, USA I've owned one of these receivers for years. It works well until you try to upgrade the firmware. Obviously Onkyo is not used to this kind of thing. It failed and the only fix it to take it to a dealer. So sure, it looks good but forget about Onkyo having a clue about quality. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : This is great. In a nutshell unbeatable value. Had the HT-RC 160 for a week now. I've had a couple of HT receivers over the past 5 years to be able to compare this thing to. A JVC, Harman Kardon, Yamaha & the Onkyo TX-SR 805. The HT-RC 160 has to be a no frills value leader. I mean 5 HDMI Inputs + Analog Video Unconversion + HDMI repeater. I replaced my Yamaha RX V365 with this, which I had bought about 6 months ago. The Yamaha was good but had to go because of only 2 HDMI inputs, no Video upconversion and HDMI Passthrough only. If your putting a TV on a wall and want only one single HDMI running thru the wall to take all your inputs to your TV you will most likely need a receiver with Video Upconversion. That way the non HDMI sources e.g. Wii which is component can be upconverted via your single HDMI input to the TV. Besides the functions, this thing sounds good. Ofcourse considering a low to mid price integrated receiver with all these functions. The set up was a breeze. If you've hooked up an AV receiver before this takes about 15 mins if not less. The Owners Manual appears OK if you need it. Beside the sound, I guess I'd comment on the Remote. I found the Remote lay out to be slightly below expectations. The other receivers I've used had a better remote layout. The Volume controls on this are not where you'd intuitively expect them to be. Overall the layout is somewhat lacking. Also in terms of fit and finish particularly the Display on the unit dont expect a whole lot. Makes sense all the money that is paid for this is going into the Sound, features and functions, there is'nt much left after that to spend on the aesthetics. This is a great sounding, loaded with features, Super Value receiver. With a few minor misses, I would still say this is a 5 Star receiver. Highly recommended. I did a fair bit of research in buying this and would strongly recommend to anyone creating a mid priced Home Theater Set up. Onkyo is a very tough competitor in this space I'd say. Customer Review 2 : Excellent Review - L. Pruss - This is an excellent buy. The number of component, hdmi, and digital inputs and outputs is great and has let us plug in a PS2, Wii, DVD player, and Satellite receiver, plus the occasional network media device. While the number may not be different than other receivers, it's the upstreaming that is great - each of those devices works on a different output (digital, HD, component, etc.) and each one looks great on the system. In addition, we have a ceiling speaker system, and the sound is really fine tuned and delivers excellent sound quality for each of the foregoing devices. We are happy with this buy. Ok, this device is great, was a breeze to set up. The two faults that I see: (1) the remote does not have a "record" button for the DVR (although it otherwise controls that device just wine); and (2) (and this is just my own annoyance), I dislike that you can't rename the inputs (although they are eminently assignable). |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : UPDATE 12/23/09 UPDATE I've had my replacement receiver for roughly a week and everything is working well. My system sounds great - right now I'm only driving a 5.1 speaker set up and this receiver handles it with ease. The internet streaming capabilities of the receiver are very enjoyable. Pandora streaming is very easy to set up, and once you've went through the somewhat tedious process of entering your login information by way of remote control, the Onyko provides a great user experience. One complaint concerning the DLNA capabilities - Windows Media Center [along with other media servers I've tried such as TVersity] require you wade through a relatively deep directory structure which can make it painful to search for and stream specific music stored on your local network. If you plan on using this feature my advice is to build a number of playlists on your computer. This way you need only navigate to one file to begin streaming your music. In order to keep the complete review at a reasonable length I'll stop here. Please note that, after receiving a working model that I was able to run the firmware update on, I have increased my rating from 3/5 to 4/5. I am satisfied with this purchase. Original Review: I received my new Onkyo HT-RC180 a few days ago and proceeded to set everything up. I finally got to the point where I could run Audyssey Thursday [12/10] evening and, after successfully doing so and toying with some of the features such as Pandora and DLNA, I believed I was 'mostly' finished with the setup. I figured that everything from here on out would be fun stuff such as tweaking settings and enjoying the receiver and so forth... But then I decided to attempt a firmware update through the included Onkyo 'NET' functionality. The first time I ran the firmware update, after the firmware download was complete but before it could finish writing the new firmware state, the console displayed a mysterious 'Error!!! 3 - 14' message. I immediately went online to look for information. It turns out that updating this model's firmware has been problematic for many people. A number of people were apparently lucky - simply rerunning the firmware update after unhooking all HDMI connections has reportedly worked for some. Fair enough I thought, I'll attempt a second update. I can't get the receiver to respond to any input following the first attempt so I'm forced to pull the power plug to force a reboot. Once the receiver has rebooted, I attempt the firmware update again. An oddity - the remote no longer works, so I have to use the receiver's front console to run setup. Another oddity - the option to run a firmware update under the Setup => 'Hardware Settings' doesn't appear until about 30 seconds after the receiver has been powered on. This is more confusing than it sounds as the 'Hardware Settings' option under Setup is always present and it takes only a few seconds to navigate to where you know from previous experience that the firmware option should be. It would be very easy for someone to simply think this value had vanished and there's certainly no reason to think new items would be added to the list in a few more seconds. Anyway, I finally attempt the second update. This time, after the download has taken place, I see a flash of text that goes by too quickly to interpret which is then immediately followed by a new error code of '3-4.' The console is not locked, I can back out of this error code and attempt to run the firmware update again. During this second consecutive run, no error message is displayed - instead after the firmware download completes, 'VPS Setting...' appears on the console and never changes - the update is apparently caught in an endless loop. I let the 'VPS Setting...' run overnight and, come morning, the situation had not improved. Each time I attempt to repeat the firmware update, I fall into the same pattern where the first attempt sees an immediate error after completing the firmware download ('3-4' error code) and the second attempt, after backing out of the first, locks at 'VPS Setting...' and requires the plug be pulled. This pattern may be repeated over and over again depending on how much of a masochist the user is. So this morning, I call Onkyo support and explain the situation, and the tech on the other end immediately tells me to return the receiver as this product has no USB port and therefore no other way to manipulate the firmware. Amazon has already shipped me a replacement that is due to arrive Monday, I've unhooked and boxed up and shipped off the old one, and hopefully this doesn't happen to me again Monday evening. If anyone else goes through this and sees the same pattern of futility, hopefully this review may be of some help and lead you to cut your losses sooner rather than later. Customer Review 1 : Happy with purchase - Geoffrey Bussiere - I recently purchased the ONKYO HT-RC180 receiver and so far it meets my expectations. The main reasons I choose the HT-RC180 over other ONKYO models or competing brands is that it offered 1080p up-conversion and ethernet connection for a reasonable price. The ethernet connection was important to me for the ability to update the firmware. I bought the ONKYO through Amazon which I highly recommend. The setup was pretty easy but takes an hour or so when you perform the room calibration and firmware update. Once hooked up to your router the receiver basically configures itself. I followed the directions on the ONKYO website and had no problems updating the firmware. One negative thing about ONKYO is their customer service center. This unit is replacing an ONKYO TX-DS797 which was experiencing drop outs during dolby-digital broadcasts. I tried calling the service center and it was horrible. I know they make a good product so I decided to stick with them but I definitely thought twice about it. I hope my new unit works for a long time. Customer Review 2 : Solid Receiver - J. Finkel - Hoboken, NJ This is truly a beast of a receiver. While a lot of companies have been shedding pounds off their receivers and reducing their size, I'm glad to see Onkyo putting out this HT-RC180, which reeks of quality and good taste. Aesthetically, it's sharp and modern...and again, fairly big. Obviously some may prefer a smaller form factor or a unit giving off less heat, but this receiver rocks. The features list is amazing for the price. You can set up to 3 zones with this one receiver or you could go for a full 11.2, though the receiver is rated for a 7.1 system at 110W per channel, so 11.2 may be too taxing. The inputs include a ton of composite, 5 hdmi, but only 2 component, 2 optical audio and 2 digital audio. It also has thx certification, audyssey, front composite inputs, headphone jack, pre-amps, excellent video processing, sirius antenna, video pass through for no lag, input assign, etc. The only gripe I have (besides the industry standard 2 component inputs) is that it will make a loud click when my hdtv channels broadcast a commercial in sd. This is only minorly annoying though. The remote is practical and attractive. It can take a while to figure out where everything on the remote is because there are so many buttons, but it's extremely handy. You press a button to designate which input you are controlling so you can operate the power and settings on (most) other devices almost like a universal remote. Compared to my Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity, it performs equally well. Both have more than enough power for my 5 Definitive Technology Mythos line of speakers (I also have an Epik Sentinel subwoofer). However, the onkyo is capable of a full 11.2 surround setup, so I didn't expect 5 speakers to show any strain. The biggest difference between the two for me was the remote control. The Onkyo has a far superior remote (and front panel buttons), which makes any task relatively easy. Also, the onkyo has slightly better menus, gets much hotter, and offers a few more inputs. It also was a bit more powerful and very slightly cleaner sounding. The Denon seemed to have better video processing and more audyssey measurements. If the two were priced the same, I'd favor the onkyo slightly, but you can probably find the denon cheaper if you try. |

Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Features
Onkyo TX-NR1007 135 Watts 9.2-Channel AV Surround Home Network Receiver (Black) Overviews As Onkyo’s first ever 9.2-channel receiver, the TX-NR1007 combines network capability and advanced A/V processing with a myriad of surround sound speaker possibilities. For instance, you can use Audyssey DSX or Dolby Pro Logic IIz to create an expanded, more immersive 9-channel soundstage for games and movies. Alternatively, you can supplement one of several different 7.2-channel set-ups in your main room with 2-channel sound in a second room. Along with the assurance of THX Ultra2 Plus certification, the TX-NR1007 brings greater convergence to your home entertainment. Audio files from a networked PC or streaming internet radio can be fed to the receiver, and then processed and output with customary Onkyo power and fidelity. Audyssey MultiEQ XT ensures a well-balanced, room-matching speaker set-up, while ISF video calibration and 1080p upscaling via Faroudja DCDi Cinema work to get the most out of your video sources. Merely cherry-picking the specs, though, doesn’t do justice to this mighty receiver-we suggest giving it an audition and letting your own eyes and ears be the judge. Related Products
Customer Review Best Customer Review : I've been an Onkyo fan for years now. This is my 5th Onkyo receiver in about 9 years or so. I've upgraded for feature set rather than anything being 'wrong' with the prior models I've had. This is the highest end model I've purchases thus far. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this one around for quite a while. It's more than I needed but I was tired of upgrading and wanted something with enough HDMI inputs and features that I wouldn't get the itch. I have a standard 5.1 surround system for speakers so I am not using the Audyssey DSX or ProLogic IIz functionality. Nor am I using the multiple zones at this time so I have no comment on that functionality. Things I like: Audyssey MultiXT - I've had versions of Audyssey in all but maybe the first Onkyo receiver I've had. I don't know whether they changed something or I've gotten better at setting my HT system up properly but after running through the Audyssey speaker setup on this receiver everything sounded much more balanced and even than the setup I had gotten with my previous TX-SR705. The 'sweet spot' is wider and I'm not getting the slight tonal shift as audio moves from one speaker to the next across the front speakers like I used to. Audyssey Dynamic Volume - This is a fantastic feature! All of my audio for everything is piped through this receiver, whether I'm watching TV, Movies, Music or playing games. With my previous receivers I was always fumbling for the volume when I was watching a show and the commercials came on since they were so much louder. I don't have to do that any more. I have the Dynamic Volume feature set to Light. It makes soft passages loud enough to hear and tones down loud passages, and when the commercials come on they aren't any louder than the tv show I was watching. I do have one quibble with it. There doesn't seem to be a feature to turn it off/on based on the source you've selected. Having this feature on when listening to music is a not a good thing. This isn't a problem with Audyssey, rather an oversight on Onkyo's part. THX Loudness - I've never really used the THX audio modes of my previous receivers much. Primarly because in order to get the sound approaching that in a theater THX recommends listening at reference volume. There are two problems with that. I live in an apartment and I like not to bleed from my ears. The THX Loudness feature works kinda like the Audyssey Dynamic volume. I find that on some movies the THX method sounds better to me than the Audyssey Dynamic Volume. Internet radio, Pandora and streaming - The interface for this could use some work (it looks like something from the 90's) but I really like the network features. Streaming audio from my PC in the office is more convenient with this than firing up the Xbox or PS3 and it's one less peice of electronics I have to have running. I also like that the Onkyo will wake up my office pc if it is sleeping when I go to stream audio. I don't know if this is something with my pc that allows this or not but it is convenient. Things I don't like - I thought my TX-SR705 was loud when it did audio or HDMI switching. This is louder. I'm hoping it's due to beefier switching components. Fortunately this is only an issue at the beginning of movies where they show previews and don't steal me warnings. Also on cable when watching non-movie channels and the commercials have been broadcast in different audio then the show. One time issue with zero audio. I was watching a tv show and changed channels. After changing the channel I had zero audio. I thought it was the channel but changing the channel back or selecting a different source (tuner) didn't fix it. I was able to fix it by unplugging the receiver for about 5 seconds and plugging it back in. This was disturbing but it hasn't happened since then. If it does I'll have to call Onkyo and find out what they can do. Overall I love this receiver even with the odd audio issue I had. Customer Review 1 : Not a fan - Carl Schnurr - Oak Park, CA Perhaps I got a bad unit, but my experience was not good and I ended up sending it back. Setup was fine and it sounded great, but the unit ran extremely hot--the top become almost blistering after just an hour or two of operation, in spite of it sitting by itself on a hardwood floor with nothing on or around it. Overheating in itself isn't a problem, but it would cause the video signal to drop completely after 2-3 hours of operation. I'd be watching a movie and 'blink', the audio would continue but the video would be gone. Note that the video would drop on ALL inputs at this point. Also, a minor point is that my remote did not reliably power on or off the unit. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't. This was my first experience with an Onkyo, and likely my last. |
