Customer Review Best Customer Review : This is my first review and my first reciever. I am amazed at the easy setup of this system. Although I am technically skilled, although not a pro, I expected the setup to be a little more difficult. This was my first home theatre after all. But it was a synch. And the GUI was outstanding. For a listener at my level the audyssey setup worked wonders. I am truly impressed with the quality and functionality of this unit. I have not made my way through all of the options, but using the upscaling feature on my Wii is great. One issue I have run into is while changing television channels (directv) if you have the cable/satellite box set to native resolution, everytime there is a resolution change and you are upscaling to 1080p the system will go black and then switch (with an audible pop). It is not that large of an inconvenience since I mostly use the onscreen tv guide to find a channel switch but it could be if you are used to just hitting channel up and down. Customer Review 1 : Plume of smoke - Mark Featherston - McAlester, OK I bought the unit back in Oct but I didn't set it up until Dec as that was when I bought my new plasma tv. The unit worked great, excellent picture good sound, for about an hour and half at which time the sound cut out. I tried all the troubleshooting steps listed in the instructions to no avail. I contacted Onkyo and they said I'd have to send it to an authorized repair store on my dime but that it was still under warranty so the repairs would be free and the repair shop would ship it back to me for free. All that took place though the repair shop called me twice to let me know they were ordering new parts so it ended up taking around a month to get the unit back. Got it hooked it up again and again I was happy with the pic and sound then after using it for around three hours then, while watching the blu-ray of Amadeus during the Don Giovanni scene, the sound cuts out again and a plume of smoke rose from the unit. So I'll be on the phone with Onkyo and probably the repair shop on Monday (Sunday now) to see whats what. I realize I'm probably just unlucky and have a especially poorly constructed unit but I can't recommend this unit. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : My background: I was a high end audio salesman for 2 years. I sold Meridian, B&W, B&O, Marantz, Mac, Adcom, Denon etc. I have heard many, many speakers on many different amplifiers and receivers. My equipment: Onkyo 707, Polk Monitor 70's, Kef Q55, Polk RT55b, Energy Sub and Boston Acoustics HD5 Pros: HDMI works very well, the picture is somewhat dark however there are adjustments on the707. Xbox and Comcast pass perfectly. On screen display is very nice. The physical front display is very nice and the receiver looks great on the rack. The sound quality is very good, mind you not great. But for the price paid this is a bargain. There are a tremendous wealth of sound fields and DSP to choose from. The buttons on the remote are laid out for Music, Movies, Gaming and THX. A very nice touch and ease of use. You can mix Dolby Digital, Dolby Height and THX in one sound field; VERY NICE! Audessy setup works very well; requires a few tweaks but otherwise nice feature. Audessy dynamic volume works great. No more jumping for the remote to turn down commercials. THIS OPTION ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS RECEIVER! Cons: On screen display is only in white. When a light of white background is being displayed you cannot see the on screen. Onkyo a chance to change the color of text would be very nice. The unit runs VERY HOT even at normal listening. Onkyo please install a FAN!!! You cannot adjust the speaker levels without losing the signal. It is very difficult to change speaker levels, EQ etc. without the sound??? My old 600 would allow a simple one button push to change settings and levels. The remote NEEDS a light. While it works fantastic the labels are squished and very, very difficult to see or use. I am very accustomed to memorizing remote layouts but this one is tough. The unit has an EQ option, you can set the EQ separately per set of speakers. I.E. Front, Front height, rear, sub etc. However it does not really work properly; 10db or - or + of 9 bands and barely hear the difference. Overall this is a very good product and capable. I am worried about the heat and possible problems in the future. I use AMEX that doubles the factory warranty FYI Customer Review 1 : Great receiver - KWS - Hilton Head SC I really like this receiver. I Replaced a high-end Yamaha receiver and the difference is significant. I believe the multEQ set up to balance the speakers was a major part. With the balance far exceeding what I had the clarity of my speakers is now enhanced, significantly. I had the need to advance to digital. I then went with the name, the reviews of others and price in order to make my decision to purchase the Onkyo TX-SR707. I bought through Amazon and was able to get a great price. I have had to call Onkyo for help. It sounded like the support was reading from the screen to help me, but I was happy some one was there to help. I was able to dope out my problems and now have an excellent sounding system. The receiver is adequate with sufficient inputs and outputs for most homes with a mixture of analog and digital equipment and when I do acquire more digital there is more than adequate HDMI hook ups. Sure it gets warm, no more than what I am use to. Yes I recommend this receiver. Customer Review 2 : Great Sound (When it works) - Chris from Norman, OK - Norman, OK I bought this unit and it was easy to set up and had great sound using 5 speakers and a sub. I used all HDMI from Blu-Ray and the Cable Box and then to the TV from the receiver. This Unit had trouble with the Cable Box and switching signal and sound types. Each time it made a loud popping noise and eventually it tripped the unit. From that point on it tripped ever time I turned it on and turned it up just a little. It even tripped on the Blu-Ray player after that point. I followed all the instructions on testing the unit by unplugging everything and turning it up all the way and then slowly tested each thing to make sure a speaker, sub or specific cable box was not tripping it (used other cable boxes). I did a hard reset on it twice then reprogrammed it. Onkyo's solution was to not use the HDMI which was the main reason I bought the unit so I tried using Digital Audio only and having the video signal go straight to the TV. It still tripped the unit. Could have had a lemon but I am not chancing it. I finally sent it back and I ordered a Yamaha. |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : After reading lots of reviews on various receivers I found the Onkyo TX-SR507, and thought that it was finally the one to buy. I then decided to take a look at what I could possibly get for a bit more, and found the TX-SR607. Let me tell you the extra features on the 607 are worth the $[...]. First: Six (6) HDMI ports, including a front HDMI port. If I were to buy the 507, I would have filled all but one of the four HDMI ports. Leaving me very little room to upgrade in the future. The front HDMI port is also a perfect addition. I can connect my laptop easily and run slideshows or online videos. Even my compact digital camera has HDMI(mini) on it, perfect for showing new photos. Second: Analog to Digital video up-conversion. Even though my only analog component is a Nintendo Wii, connected via component video. However my TV is wall mounted, and the 607 allows me to run just a single HDMI cable from the receiver to my TV to carry all signals. This is far easier then running bulky component cables. The Up-conversion quality is pretty good, not the best I have seen, but again when the source video is 1/4 the output resolution you can never get perfection. Third: Automatic volume control. This is the feature that pushed me over the edge. Automatic volume control means no more super-loud TV ads, or changing channels and getting blasted by some overly loud broadcast. Note that Automatic volume control is NOT the same as dynamic compression. Dynamic compression dulls your audio by making both the quiet sounds louder, and the louder sound quieter. Automatic volume control preserves the full-range audio while still keeping the overall maximum volume in check. The TX-SR607 is short (depth wise) enough to easily connect everything and not have lots of wires crammed up behind it in a cabinet. The unit does get warm while operating, but never too hot to touch. It is fanless, so that means zero extra room noise. A trade-off I will take over a fan any day. The sound quality is great. I am using the system with all identical Polk speakers, and a 10" 100-watt subwoofer. The setup was painless and the automatic calibration worked wonders. My only request for improvement is to make more if the menu only functions accessible by remote, such as the night mode, or the auto volume level setting. Customer Review 1 : Hard to Beat... Lot of Bang for the Buck - J. Moritz - For a LR/FR home theater set up this is a great Receiver. It does everything as promised and it does it very well. You don't need a lot of power to drive most home theater speakers that are sold today. I use this unit in my Greatroom and I am very pleased with it. In my theater room which is a true home theater set-up I use the Onkyo 907 with 140 watts. Onkyo's do run on the warm side so be sure they are well ventilated. There are several sub 0 Receivers out there but I think that Onkyo gives you good quality for your money. Customer Review 2 : Good Value - S. Block - Houston, Texas Overall, this receiver is pretty good. I replaced a Denon AVR-2805 because I needed HDMI switching and upconversion. Pros: 1) The sound is much improved. The included microphone and auto-calibrate routine did a great job of optimizing the surround sound settings for our existing 5.1 speaker system. This is installed in a large open family room with wood floors, and I always had problems getting clear voices at low volumes in the past. It sounds great now! Cons: 1) No On-Screen-Display at 1080p. I was shocked at this. If I switch to 720p the volume OSD works fine. The "menu" screens will replace the video stream, there is no overlay. Also, the menu switches from 1080p to VGA output. This causes a large delay, and forces the TV to switch display formats. 2) No S-Video inputs. I used mostly S-video inputs on my old receiver. I had to re-wire all of my old (non-hdmi) sources with component video or downgrade to composite cables. |

Onkyo HT-RC160 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver Features

Customer Review Best Customer Review : This is great. In a nutshell unbeatable value. Had the HT-RC 160 for a week now. I've had a couple of HT receivers over the past 5 years to be able to compare this thing to. A JVC, Harman Kardon, Yamaha & the Onkyo TX-SR 805. The HT-RC 160 has to be a no frills value leader. I mean 5 HDMI Inputs + Analog Video Unconversion + HDMI repeater. I replaced my Yamaha RX V365 with this, which I had bought about 6 months ago. The Yamaha was good but had to go because of only 2 HDMI inputs, no Video upconversion and HDMI Passthrough only. If your putting a TV on a wall and want only one single HDMI running thru the wall to take all your inputs to your TV you will most likely need a receiver with Video Upconversion. That way the non HDMI sources e.g. Wii which is component can be upconverted via your single HDMI input to the TV. Besides the functions, this thing sounds good. Ofcourse considering a low to mid price integrated receiver with all these functions. The set up was a breeze. If you've hooked up an AV receiver before this takes about 15 mins if not less. The Owners Manual appears OK if you need it. Beside the sound, I guess I'd comment on the Remote. I found the Remote lay out to be slightly below expectations. The other receivers I've used had a better remote layout. The Volume controls on this are not where you'd intuitively expect them to be. Overall the layout is somewhat lacking. Also in terms of fit and finish particularly the Display on the unit dont expect a whole lot. Makes sense all the money that is paid for this is going into the Sound, features and functions, there is'nt much left after that to spend on the aesthetics. This is a great sounding, loaded with features, Super Value receiver. With a few minor misses, I would still say this is a 5 Star receiver. Highly recommended. I did a fair bit of research in buying this and would strongly recommend to anyone creating a mid priced Home Theater Set up. Onkyo is a very tough competitor in this space I'd say. Customer Review 2 : Excellent Review - L. Pruss - This is an excellent buy. The number of component, hdmi, and digital inputs and outputs is great and has let us plug in a PS2, Wii, DVD player, and Satellite receiver, plus the occasional network media device. While the number may not be different than other receivers, it's the upstreaming that is great - each of those devices works on a different output (digital, HD, component, etc.) and each one looks great on the system. In addition, we have a ceiling speaker system, and the sound is really fine tuned and delivers excellent sound quality for each of the foregoing devices. We are happy with this buy. Ok, this device is great, was a breeze to set up. The two faults that I see: (1) the remote does not have a "record" button for the DVR (although it otherwise controls that device just wine); and (2) (and this is just my own annoyance), I dislike that you can't rename the inputs (although they are eminently assignable). |

Customer Review Best Customer Review : UPDATE 12/23/09 UPDATE I've had my replacement receiver for roughly a week and everything is working well. My system sounds great - right now I'm only driving a 5.1 speaker set up and this receiver handles it with ease. The internet streaming capabilities of the receiver are very enjoyable. Pandora streaming is very easy to set up, and once you've went through the somewhat tedious process of entering your login information by way of remote control, the Onyko provides a great user experience. One complaint concerning the DLNA capabilities - Windows Media Center [along with other media servers I've tried such as TVersity] require you wade through a relatively deep directory structure which can make it painful to search for and stream specific music stored on your local network. If you plan on using this feature my advice is to build a number of playlists on your computer. This way you need only navigate to one file to begin streaming your music. In order to keep the complete review at a reasonable length I'll stop here. Please note that, after receiving a working model that I was able to run the firmware update on, I have increased my rating from 3/5 to 4/5. I am satisfied with this purchase. Original Review: I received my new Onkyo HT-RC180 a few days ago and proceeded to set everything up. I finally got to the point where I could run Audyssey Thursday [12/10] evening and, after successfully doing so and toying with some of the features such as Pandora and DLNA, I believed I was 'mostly' finished with the setup. I figured that everything from here on out would be fun stuff such as tweaking settings and enjoying the receiver and so forth... But then I decided to attempt a firmware update through the included Onkyo 'NET' functionality. The first time I ran the firmware update, after the firmware download was complete but before it could finish writing the new firmware state, the console displayed a mysterious 'Error!!! 3 - 14' message. I immediately went online to look for information. It turns out that updating this model's firmware has been problematic for many people. A number of people were apparently lucky - simply rerunning the firmware update after unhooking all HDMI connections has reportedly worked for some. Fair enough I thought, I'll attempt a second update. I can't get the receiver to respond to any input following the first attempt so I'm forced to pull the power plug to force a reboot. Once the receiver has rebooted, I attempt the firmware update again. An oddity - the remote no longer works, so I have to use the receiver's front console to run setup. Another oddity - the option to run a firmware update under the Setup => 'Hardware Settings' doesn't appear until about 30 seconds after the receiver has been powered on. This is more confusing than it sounds as the 'Hardware Settings' option under Setup is always present and it takes only a few seconds to navigate to where you know from previous experience that the firmware option should be. It would be very easy for someone to simply think this value had vanished and there's certainly no reason to think new items would be added to the list in a few more seconds. Anyway, I finally attempt the second update. This time, after the download has taken place, I see a flash of text that goes by too quickly to interpret which is then immediately followed by a new error code of '3-4.' The console is not locked, I can back out of this error code and attempt to run the firmware update again. During this second consecutive run, no error message is displayed - instead after the firmware download completes, 'VPS Setting...' appears on the console and never changes - the update is apparently caught in an endless loop. I let the 'VPS Setting...' run overnight and, come morning, the situation had not improved. Each time I attempt to repeat the firmware update, I fall into the same pattern where the first attempt sees an immediate error after completing the firmware download ('3-4' error code) and the second attempt, after backing out of the first, locks at 'VPS Setting...' and requires the plug be pulled. This pattern may be repeated over and over again depending on how much of a masochist the user is. So this morning, I call Onkyo support and explain the situation, and the tech on the other end immediately tells me to return the receiver as this product has no USB port and therefore no other way to manipulate the firmware. Amazon has already shipped me a replacement that is due to arrive Monday, I've unhooked and boxed up and shipped off the old one, and hopefully this doesn't happen to me again Monday evening. If anyone else goes through this and sees the same pattern of futility, hopefully this review may be of some help and lead you to cut your losses sooner rather than later. Customer Review 1 : Happy with purchase - Geoffrey Bussiere - I recently purchased the ONKYO HT-RC180 receiver and so far it meets my expectations. The main reasons I choose the HT-RC180 over other ONKYO models or competing brands is that it offered 1080p up-conversion and ethernet connection for a reasonable price. The ethernet connection was important to me for the ability to update the firmware. I bought the ONKYO through Amazon which I highly recommend. The setup was pretty easy but takes an hour or so when you perform the room calibration and firmware update. Once hooked up to your router the receiver basically configures itself. I followed the directions on the ONKYO website and had no problems updating the firmware. One negative thing about ONKYO is their customer service center. This unit is replacing an ONKYO TX-DS797 which was experiencing drop outs during dolby-digital broadcasts. I tried calling the service center and it was horrible. I know they make a good product so I decided to stick with them but I definitely thought twice about it. I hope my new unit works for a long time. Customer Review 2 : Solid Receiver - J. Finkel - Hoboken, NJ This is truly a beast of a receiver. While a lot of companies have been shedding pounds off their receivers and reducing their size, I'm glad to see Onkyo putting out this HT-RC180, which reeks of quality and good taste. Aesthetically, it's sharp and modern...and again, fairly big. Obviously some may prefer a smaller form factor or a unit giving off less heat, but this receiver rocks. The features list is amazing for the price. You can set up to 3 zones with this one receiver or you could go for a full 11.2, though the receiver is rated for a 7.1 system at 110W per channel, so 11.2 may be too taxing. The inputs include a ton of composite, 5 hdmi, but only 2 component, 2 optical audio and 2 digital audio. It also has thx certification, audyssey, front composite inputs, headphone jack, pre-amps, excellent video processing, sirius antenna, video pass through for no lag, input assign, etc. The only gripe I have (besides the industry standard 2 component inputs) is that it will make a loud click when my hdtv channels broadcast a commercial in sd. This is only minorly annoying though. The remote is practical and attractive. It can take a while to figure out where everything on the remote is because there are so many buttons, but it's extremely handy. You press a button to designate which input you are controlling so you can operate the power and settings on (most) other devices almost like a universal remote. Compared to my Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity, it performs equally well. Both have more than enough power for my 5 Definitive Technology Mythos line of speakers (I also have an Epik Sentinel subwoofer). However, the onkyo is capable of a full 11.2 surround setup, so I didn't expect 5 speakers to show any strain. The biggest difference between the two for me was the remote control. The Onkyo has a far superior remote (and front panel buttons), which makes any task relatively easy. Also, the onkyo has slightly better menus, gets much hotter, and offers a few more inputs. It also was a bit more powerful and very slightly cleaner sounding. The Denon seemed to have better video processing and more audyssey measurements. If the two were priced the same, I'd favor the onkyo slightly, but you can probably find the denon cheaper if you try. |
