Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I love this system, even though I haven't used it to it's full potential. The sound is dynamic and I couldn't ask for anything more. I'm no expert on sound quality or anything but I know what I like and this system goes over and beyond the call of duty. If you are looking for something great for an even better price, this system is definitely a winner!

Customer Review 1 : love it - Luis F. Juarez - Long Beach, CA USA
still in love with my sound system =]
thinking of ordering a new one.

Customer Review 2 : Unfortunate - Alexander Tripp - Underhill, VT United States
I owned this for five months before the receiver died. It's in what's called blinking-red-light-of-death mode which essentially means it is in current overload protection mode. I took extremely good care of this receiver. It was configured properly using the correct speakers/cabling for ohm rating, was never turned up above 40, it was never left on for long periods of time and there is zero dust accumulation within the unit.

It sounded great while I had it and I'm extremely disappointed that after 5 months it spontaneously died.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : After my 21 year old Sony STR-AV460 receiver lost sound on one channel, I began searching for a replacement. I was already impressed with the Onkyo surround sound system (HT-R320)I bought 2 years ago to go with a big screen television, and after studying reviews in Consumer Reports and the Amazon web site decided to stay with Onkyo. The TX-8211 was easy to set up, since all I had to do was swap over the speaker, phonograph, CD player, and tape deck connections already in place. The sound quality is a major improvement over my old receiver (which had probably suffered some gradual deterioration over the years) - no distortion, and significantly more vlume output. My only disappointment is that the FM sensitivity is the same as the old equipment (and the other Onkyo receiver, for that matter). I had hoped I might get better reception of some of the weaker stations in my area (Boston 'burbs), but I presume a better antenna is needed to address that issue. Bottom line: nice unit, great price, and very quick delivery from the vendor (J & R Music/Computer World).

Customer Review 1 : a prudent choice - Kara Elise Kovlacheck-west - san diego, ca United States
i bought this because at the time it was the most affordable receiver with a phono input, and i have always heard good things about onkyo. to put it simply (as most other reviews seem to agree): solid, affordable, simple. i've driven 4 different sets of speakers (at different times) on this onkyo, and all sound decent, if uninspired. other than that, i'd say its the honda civic of receivers. i compare it to the vintage 70's receiver i fire up at times (the '69 dodge charger of receivers)- it blows the onkyo out of the water in sound intensity and power, but seems ready to blow the speakers out as well. what does this all mean? i don't know.

Customer Review 2 : Onkyo - Scorpiette - New England
I've given this 5 stars because I have absolutely nothing negative to say. For the price, this is a great receiver. It fills my condo with full rich sound at quarter volume; I get three Public Radio stations (and lots of others); and it's easy to use. I recommend it.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : No problems with this item. The big plus is the ability to add up to 5 CDs while it is playing.

Customer Review 2 : pretty lame - Michael Zerella -
Sound is ok, but it has absolutely no ability to absorb even tiny bumps, depsite giving it a lot of extra cushioning, so it skips way too much. It can even make itself skip when the music volume is turned up. Also has a hard time with moderately damaged CDs.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I've had this Onkyo model for about a year now and I deliberately waited this long to do a review as I had heard that for some buyers, it took a few months for things to go awry and so I wanted to be sure I thoroughly "studied" mine before I gave my opinion. As it's been some time now and I have played literally hundreds of cds on this thing, I have to say that I am very pleased with its performance. My version has an on/off switch as well as a standby mode and so I'm satisfied that I don't waste electricity if I don't want to stay on standby mode.

Although there isn't a headphone jack, I'm not too bothered as I have a headphone jack on the TEAC amplifier that I connected this thing to and also as I rarely listen to headphones except when I'm on the go (through my MP3 player), I wasn't too concerned about this absent feature unlike others who have complained about it. I like the 6 cd disc changer and the fact that I can remove cds while one of them is still playing and I feel the look of the set is very classy and cool especially the "night light" which you'll have to see for yourself to know what I mean.

My Onkyo is connected through a TEAC amplifier using an optical digital out which is subsequently connected to 5 surround Robertson speakers which allows me to listen to my cds a number of different ways although I personally prefer to set it at stereo mode and hence using only the front 3 speakers. Prior to my getting this set, I had a Sony microcompo set which I thought had good sound qualities and when that finally conked out after about 5 years, I tried using my Philips DVD player for my cds but the sound just didn't cut it for me.

I decided to spend a little on a standalone, dedicated cd player and after doing some research online, I decided to give this Onkyo a chance and boy was the difference like night and day! Don't let anyone tell you that your DVD player is good enough if you are an audiophile or into great music as a hobby like I am. All my cds sounded like they were given a new lease of life and I finally felt I was truely doing justice to my speakers when it came to my cds. I'm convinced now that you don't have to spend thousands on a sound system as this Onkyo with optical digital out gets you great sound from your cds and at a much lower price. I have to say that for what you get out of it, this is truly great value for money and I hope to continue enjoying my cds with this system setup for many years to come. Many of my cds that sounded terrible before now sound very good through the Onkyo. This product shows that you don't have to splurge to enjoy good quality sound from your cds.

Highly recommended!

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I have had this Receiver now close to 9 Months.

Through those months it has been nothing, but Spectacular!

I was very hesitant in replacing my SONY ES3000 Receiver with an Onkyo. But from doing research, and with help from my brother (who has been an Onkyo fan for years) I decided to give it a try.

Man, the difference in sound quality and power are night and day. With the Onkyo, I am able to hear subtle effects from different channels in the movies, even at very low volumes! That was impossible with the Sony.

I found out also that Most Receivers, like the Sony, only put out around 1/2 of their Rated Power in 7.1 Surround Mode. Not the Onkyo! It puts out the rated, and even more at times! Especially in 2 Channel Stereo Mode!

There is no Audible White Noise (Hiss) that I can hear with the volume on High! (heard alot of white noise with the Sony).

I won't go into the "Technical" details in this review, but just wanted to say that I am very very much pleased with switching to Onkyo!
Here are a few reasons the Negative Comments here about the 906 are Unjustified: (It's Hotter than most, yes, but so is my Computer I built from Scratch! - But both give high performance, and my Computer has been doing so for quite a while now):

[...]

I own one and am definitely impressed!

(Just a note I see the Same "EXACT Copies" of these rare bad review comments floating around on the NET on different sites, so most likely they work for the competing brands, and are engaging in false Negative Marketing)

Signed,
Rocc

Customer Review 1 : EXCELLENT !! - S. SABO - Ballico, CA
First off, I'm not a tech freak but I do consider myself above average.. I have had Blu-ray Players since the beginning of them.. I have a Sony BDP-S1 & a Sharp HP-20u.. This 906 was easier to set up than I thought it was going to be.. Hooked up my Sony Blu-Ray but couldn't get HD sound.. Called Onkyo they were great he tried to change the settings on the Sony but it still wouldn't get HD sound.. Long story short he said some earlier Models of Blu-Ray players wouldn't put out HD sound without going back the the MFG. like Sony to get them to change the settings.. I didn't want to go through that hassle.. So I did some research on Amazon and found the new Onkyo DV-BD507 Blu-Ray player.. According to Onkyo the two were a seamless connection.. That was a unstatement I hooked up the BD507 Blu-Ray player and WOW all I had to do was to make a few setting changes and I was totally amazed at the HD sound and picture which was beyond EXCELLENT and the up scaling to 1080P excellent.. I hooked this up to my Sharp LC-46D-64U

Thanks Amazon for the great price on the Onkyo receiver & Onkyo Blu-Ray player and Onkyo tech Support

Steve, Ballico, CA

Customer Review 2 : Great Receiver / Home network - M. Widner - Afghanistan
I was a bit overwhelmed at first but after a couple of hours setting everything up and getting it tuned in....This baby rocks! Completely satisfied. It is heavy as crap but it ain't crap. I replaced my bose life style with this and jbl speakers. Very tight combination. Looks great. Price is a bit steep but in this case, you get what you pay for and that is about everything. Unless we go to some new age alien technology, I think this unit will last me a very very long time. Get it and you will see...don't and you won't.

All of this technology is available packaged in a sleek looking, compact system that can be used in any room of the house or office. Audition one today to hear and see what you have been missing.
* Requires optional antenna and paid subscription.

Key technology Features and Supported FOrmats:
192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

DVD-Audio: Prepare for the concert of a lifetime! 5.1 channel DVD-Audio combines multichannel high-resolution audio with video, song lyrics and more. While discs that carry this logo must be played back in DVD-A equipped machines to unleash their full potential, many are compatible with conventional DVD-Video players as well.

JPG: JPG is a standard image format used in today's digital cameras and personal computers. DVD players that carry this logo are able to read CD-R/RWs that contain JPG image information and display slide shows on your television (such as recent vacations, family photos, etc.).

RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo’s exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What’s more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can’t be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

Plays WMA: This audio compression format from Microsoft® allows you to reduce the size of your audio files for storage on your computer’s hard drive or portable devices. This allows you to store many more songs than with uncompressed CD audio, using the same amount of disc space or memory. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in WMA format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

CD Video: This format, known as Video-CD (VCD), is commonly used for karaoke, to produce home movies, and slideshows, with menus and other special on-screen graphics.

MP3 Playback: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

SACD: Are you ready for a brand new music listening experience? 5.1 channel Super Audio CD represents the best music has to offer. Direct Stream Digital™ recording technology is a drastic improvement over Compact Disc, both in technology and sound quality. Thanks to multichannel sound, it doesn't just appear as if the musicians are playing in your living room. It sounds as if you're transported from your living room into the original performance space.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path – perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

XM Ready: The XM "Connect-and-Play," is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners.

DTS Surround: DTS® is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Unlike its Dolby® Digital counterpart, DTS uses less compression for its audio encoding.

Dolby Digital / Pro-Logic II: Dolby Digital is a discrete 5.1 channel audio format for movies and music. Pro-Logic II is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic standard. Pro-Logic II provides a full-range signal to the five main channels, in addition to a subwoofer channel. This creates a realistic surround environment from a two-channel source, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio, etc.

VLSC: Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s!

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I replaced a cabinet full of high-end audio gear with this unit. I was sick of all the complexity and the space and maintenance of the other gear. This unit appealed to be because of it's integration of several components, its small size and the Onkyo brand, which has a good longstanding reputation. I was not disappointed.

Here's three things I really liked about this unit. First, the controls make sense and there are not a billion of them like most receivers. I was able to operate most functions out of the box without reading the manual. My wife also was able to do this. Too many electronics today have far more tiny buttons than you will never use in a lifetime - this one is pretty clean. And importantly, the VOLUME setting is a big round knob! Halleluja!! No small arrows to punch UP and DOWN for volume! Secondly, the all-in-done CD/DVD/CD-ROM drive is simply great. You put in any disc, it knows what it is, and you hit the familiar PLAY arrow. The Jog/Shuttle dial is a nifty feeling way to skip to the track or selection you want. And third, the unit looks clean, and it is very robust and solid feeling, for its 30W per channel. It doesn't feel like a plastic toy.

The sound quality is quite good considering the speakers are rather smallish. I was a tad disappointed in the speakers - not a lot, just a little. They do not feel as solid as I might have expected. To get a well balanced sound on my shelf, I had to engage the bass augmentation switch one notch. My room is 18 x 20. If you had a much bigger room, these speakers might not fill the room. I do not plan on using the XM radio features, so no comment on that. The FM tuner worked nicely given the state of FM these days, and was easy to set, although setting the presets did require a trip to the manual. This is one area of the firmware I didn't care for, but since it is not used too frequently it is hard to complain.

At the end of the day, is this worthy of the price? I have to say YES with no reservations. It's well made, easy to operate, sounds very good and doesn't take up too much space, which is after all, one of the major reasons for getting a unit like this! Good job Onkyo!

Customer Review 2 : it blew after a year, and Onkyo didn't care - David Lawton - St Louis, MO United States
I was pleased with this at first. I did not use it heavily - it was a bedroom system, not my main one. After just over one year, so just out of warranty,it gave a loud bang and then made no sound. I did all obvious troubleshooting and then called Onkyo - they just said that it was my problem, and to take it to any service shop at my expense. Their closest Onkyo specialist service was six hundred miles away. Unacceptable. Save your money - buy something else.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : For such a price, none of other receivers can beat the Onkyo 606.

I read the specs of many amps. 606 has more HDMIs and it supports video upconverting (only to 1080i), biamp (does improve my speakers' sound). The sound quality is among the best.

Although it supports those blu-ray sound format decoding, it is not a deal breaker since most blu-ray player has decoder themselves, and PS3 can't even pass through those codec but only PCM.

One big problem when using PS3 (both 605 and 606): it has background noise and it is very noticable when volume is higher than 60. It is one onkyo chip bug and requires firmware update. I haven't done it yet worrying about broke it down.

Bottomline: it is the best receiver for this price considering the feature, sound quality, HD support. (despite the PS3 bug)

Customer Review 1 : Receiver is a FAIL - N. Zigon - Dallas, TX
I bought my SR 606 last year for Christmas, about 1 year and 10 days later, it won't switch to different inputs without constantly cycling it on and off. Literally 30-40 tries, its ridiculous. It appears that many other people on here are suffering this same problem. The receiver itself is a good unit, although the very long delay between switching inputs made it difficult to set up initially. The sound is excellent and its full of features, it does everything I need it to do, except work when I want it to. The receiver does run very hot, enough to burn your hand, which seems like an oversight in production. Service is as mentioned in a previous review, "backed up", and I'm not willing to be without it for a couple of months, at cost to me. I'll be upgrading to a different unit soon. I will not buy Onkyo again.
Please take our advice and spend money on a better product.

Customer Review 2 : Top pick - audiodreamer - Bethany, OK
I believe that this was a top pick of Home Theater Mag, when they were reviewing it. I can't complain. If I had more money I might have spent more money. So what more could I ask for? More money, a bigger house a theater room bigger badder speakers, thats what we all want right. Still dreaming.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I've owned this receiver for about 3 months now.
Inputs/outputs: ample; covers RCA, optical, coaxial, s-video, composite video, component video. I like video signals from different inputs is converted to component output so that I can view say my camcorder connected to the video input in front on my TV which is connected to the component output.

Remote: Quite user friendly and the macros work with some flaws. For example, the remote does not remember your system state, so if you setup a macro to listen to music using your receiver and DVD player, then if trigger a second macro to watch DVDs on your TV, receiver, and DVD player, it will not remember that your DVD player and receiver are already on. I fixed that by getting a Harmony Remote that rocks.

Speaker connects - I like the color coded connectors on the rear panel and also that Onkyo gives you stickers to tag your cables with L, R, LS, RS, C etc.

Zone 2 - not used

Audio Setup: The auto setup using the included mic is pretty cool. I used my camera's tripod to place the mic at ear-height on my couch and it provide enough input to the receiver to adjust relative levels across speakers as well as the equalization. The only error it made was, it thought my rear surrounds Polk R15 were large speakers. I overrid that later.

Sound quality and power: I'm using this receiver with 5 speakers and no subwoofer (Polk R50 fronts, R15 rears and Infinity Entra 2 Center). The sound is excellent. Still don't miss the sub.

I tried the Onkyo TX-SR503 before this and that's a great receiver too. I exchanged it for the 603 in order to get the video conversion and the auto setup.

Customer Review 1 : Terrific bargain - Jeffrey A. Sherman - Broomfield, CO USA
This unit is no longer available directly from retailers, which is good and bad. It is bad because it is a very nice, full-featured receiver that had a very reasonable MSRP. It is good because it is often available used or through resellers at deep discount prices.

When paired with a good universal remote like one of the units from Harmony, this receiver makes a terrific centerpiece for a reasonably priced home theater. It is a significant improvement in performance from "home theaters in a box," but much cheaper than many receivers with HDMI inputs.

Customer Review 2 : The perfect home theater unit! - T. Malitis - Pa
This Onkyo was a step up over my Sony Theater in a Box. All I can say is the difference is amazing. The unit comes with its own mic to set up the speaker levels. If you are not a tech person don't worry the instructions are easy to follow. The important thing with this unit is the wattage is constant to the speakers. This was important because my last unit blew a set of infinities. This happened because the wattage was not constant with the sony so during quiet scenes the wattage would fall then something would happen and the speakers would get a surge of power. Poof their goes my speakers. Anyways for the money you will not find a better unit. Oh if you are a person who needs HDMI imputs you might want to look at the newer versions that have more of those imputs.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : After checking as many reviews as my time allowed, I bought this one. It's been a while since I purchase a receiver. I used to have a 5-channel surround receiver for mostly music listening. This receiver is a different kind of animal.
Since my liviing room is small, 15x15, and seat back close to wall, I set it up for 5.1. After surround calibration with microphone that came with it, the surround effect is very good. There's no need for manual adjustment. I listen to music wtih DPL II mode most of the time. When watching a DVD, I found very little difference between Neo 6 and DPL II if any. When watching Blueray DVD, the mode was set by the disc and the receiver handles very well. The IPOD docking cable makes it so easy.
There are things that I don't like but I can live with.
1) When connecting to IPOD, you'll need to turn off the receiver first and turn it back on. Also, I need to push the input "iPOD USB" button in remote control. IPOD output is louder than all other output.
2) After choosing input each time, I have to push the "receiver" button to regain control of the sound mode. Master volume is not affected at any time.
3) The radio antenna is weak.
4) Remote control is manageable but I wish they can do a better job with manual writing to help.
5) When route all HDMI into the receiver and use the HDMI output to connect to TV, I must turn the receiver on before the signal can reach TV.

Customer Review 1 : Replaced Underwhelming Onkyo TX-SR606 - EAE - ny ny
I purchased the Onkyo TX-SR-606 and had disappointing results with video conversion and shutdowns. Onkyo refused to fix it so I returned it to Amazon. Got the Pioneer VSX-1019 AH-K with Energy 5.1 Take Speakers and could not be happier. I use this home theater setup with my 60" Kuro Pioneer Plasma. Works fantastic with the LG WiFi Blu Ray player also. Excellent sound reproduction and strong Bass. I am very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend it. CNET review was right on.

Customer Review 2 : Loud buzz after two hours of operation, Poor customer service - Tony -
This unit was easy to setup using MCACC. It gives great picture and sound quality WHEN it is working.

After about a month of service, however, I noticed a loud transformer buzz emanating from the unit. It occurs after about one and a half hours of operation and it is extremely distracting when trying to watch a movie or listen to music.

I believe this is a heat related issue, and I've noticed other customers with similar heat complaints. I have the unit installed in a completely open shelf, but the transformer hum persists.

I noticed this phenomenon just as my window to return to Amazon had expired. Amazon customer service explained there was nothing they could do. If it were not for this limitation, I would have retruned this item.

Pioneer technical support was even less help. They would not send me a replacement unit, only service my existing one. After contacting several "authorized" customer service centers in the area, the quickest turn around time that could be found was 4 weeks from drop off. A one year "warranty" is useless if one has to wait a month for a defective product to be fixed.

Despite high ratings on other sites, I wish I had read more actual customer reviews of this product before purchasing it. In the end, I wish I had spent a little more money on a higher quality receiver.

Turn your home into a digital theater with OnkyoM-^Rs 6.1-channel digital surround receiver. Not only is it equipped with enough inputs and outputs for the most elaborate systems, but it has plenty of high-current, ultrawide-bandwidth power to fill even large entertainment rooms. Also, the multi-room capability lets you have music in any room in your home!

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : After doing a ton of research to find the right receiver for me, I decided on this one - in favor of the competing Denon and Harmon Kardon receivers.

Onkyo gets 5 out of 5 for the feature set. Onkyo certainly did its homework before developing this piece of amazing hardware. This receiver can handle almost any audio format available today (Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, DTS-ES 6.1) and has several DSP features like Dolby PL II, Neo:6, and more.

This receiver has connectivity features that would satisfy even the demanding users. It has more than enough video (S-Video as well as component video) and audio inputs, including one for turntables! Further, 3 optical digital audio inputs, 3 coaxial digital audio inputs and 1 optical digital output make sure that you can connect every device to it using the digital connectors.

It also features pre-outs for all 7.1 channels, which makes it easy to upgrade your home theater system, should you wish to move on.

The built-in amps are powerful with 100 watts per channel (100 x 6 watts) with 8 ohm speakers (the most usual speaker impedence). This should be sufficient for most medium sized rooms upto about 300 sq feet (assuming you like to listen real loud).

Sound quality is amazing, and it works its magic equally well on 2-channel as well as multi-channel sound inputs. Being THX-certified, you would have high expectations with its sound and picture quality, and take my word for it, you will not be disappointed!

The superior OSD is clear and very easy to navigate through. The remote control is a bit large, but its capabilities are amazing. The remote is lighted and has functions for programming macros and for programming individual buttons from buttons on other remote controllers.

All in all, this THX-certified receiver has all that any home theater aficionado could ask for.

Customer Review 1 : onkyo 797 is awesome home theatre piece - -
used to power a high end mission stereo system in 5.1. sounds great with music and home theatre. i have expecially loved the all-stereo mode and dolby Pro-logic II for movies.

all around recommended by someone who has previewed over a dozen receivers in past 3 years.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I decided recently that it was time to grow up and get rid of my Samsung home-theater-in-a-box. I've had it for nearly 3 years now, and though it was a good starter setup, my needs have exceeded it's capabilities.
Enter the Onkyo TX-SR576.

My current A/V setup includes 3 sources connected via HDMI (PS3, 360 and MacBook). Since my Panasonic plasma only has 2 HDMI inputs in the back, I've been using a crappy Monoprice analog switch to swap the signals. Besides being annoying, this provided me with an audio problem. I had to figure out how to get surround sound out of my devices into my Samsung's single optical digital input. Yet another switch was required to run optical-out of my 360/PS3 to the Samsung, however the switch I bought was really cheap and just didn't work consistently - save yourself any hassles and just never buy an optical digital switch, they're junk.

Just to give you an example, playing my XBOX 360, it required me to turn on the TV, choose the HDMI input, then go push the button on the HDMI switch, and also turn the optical switch to #1 to feed the audio to the receiver, then switch the receiver to the optical input. If I was lucky I might actually get audio out of the receiver. The same process was required all over again if I wanted to switch to the PS3. Frustrating.
After doing a ton of research and realistically evaluating my budget, I ended up with the Onkyo TX-SR576. This would be considered by most "audiophiles" to be a beginner's or budget model, however I find that it's the best value for your dollar for a number of reasons:

1. The most important aspect of this receiver over all others - it is the ONLY one in it's price range that can process 5.1/7.1 digital audio over HDMI. This matters because the other receivers simply pass-through the signal to your television, so for example if you're pushing a Blu-Ray player through the TX-SR576, you can get the surround audio to come through the speakers connected to the receiver. With other receivers you will only get the audio over your television's speakers. The TX-SR576 does this at a 0 price point, which is amazing. Offerings from Sony, Denon, Yamaha and even Marantz do not give you this feature and though I assume it's going to be standard across the range of receivers in the future, this is the only "budget" model that currently gives you this flexibility, and it works incredibly well.

2. Linear PCM decoding - For anyone with a modern Blu-Ray player or a PS3 this is another killer feature. Most of these newer devices can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD within the device itself and output over PCM, so the receiver doesn't have to do the work. So, in the case of the TX-SR576 you don't need to be bothered that it doesn't decode DTS-HD or TrueHD because your player does it for you, and spits it out over Linear PCM, which the TX-SR576 can decode, giving you the benefits of these newer audio formats without paying a ton of money for a receiver that has the little logos printed on it.
In conclusion, I'm extremely happy to have a true A/V receiver for the first time in my life. It does everything I need it to do and more, with options for future upgrading (7.1 & bi-amping capability). The TX-SR576 has an automatic Audyssey speaker and EQ setup, which used to only be available on high-end models costing 00+ and it is a much welcomed feature. Zone 2 is another cool feature which lets you run a second set of speakers in another room via a totally different audio source. You get the standard DTS and Dolbly offerings as well as some Onkyo-specific presets for sound. Onkyo makes an option iPod dock as well, which can be controlled via the remote and information displayed on the unit itself.

My setup now is much more streamlined and easy to use, with the highest quality signals and connections possible. Everything is connected digitally, and accessible via my Harmony 520 remote with a few button presses. Since my optical ports were free I decided to use one of them for my AirPort's optical out. Oh, wait... you have an AirPort Express and didn't know it could do digital optical out? Well guess what, it can, and it spits out some really heavenly digital audio at 144khz. Couple this with the Remote App for the iPhone and you have the ultimate in music-geek luxury.

If you're thinking about stepping into a receiver for the first time, or upgrading to a model with HDMI processing, I have to HIGHLY recommend this model. Onkyo is known for great quality and value and the TX-SR576 is the embodiment of those traditions.

***There are no problems with connecting this receiver to the PS3 over HDMI - none whatsoever. If you are having trouble please try a new HDMI cable or call Onkyo service about the problem, DO NOT write off this receiver because of a localized issue, this is a great machine***

Best Customer Review : See my review regarding the onkyo 875. I went ahead with the 905 in February and have been very pleased. Updating the unit has been a pain but with a little know how isn't hard. It is worth the money especially at the price offered now. Good luck finding anything much better.

Customer Review 1 : Great product - Sandy84 - South Brunswick, NJ
Bought this a year ago from Amazon, for my home theater. Very satisfied with the audio quality.

Customer Review 2 : good but not better - John John - Phila Pa
I bought this to replace an older version (onkyo tx-ds494) of a 5.1 system. and I have to say that the sound quality was not all that much better. If you are looking for bells and whistles that's fine but if you just want great sound.....stick with a model with a smaller price tag....onkyo makes a great sound no matter what model you choose. p.s. I sent this one back and re-connected my old one!

Onkyo 7.1 HDMI U/C, THX A/V Receiver TXSR804

Onkyo TX-SR804 7.1 Channel Up-Converting THX Certified A/V Receiver (Black) Specifications

With such complete home entertainment functionality, it woulld seem wrong to define the TX-SR804 by only two words--Power and simplicity. Take power, at a rock-solid 105 watts per channel. It's only a rating, but it's something completely different when you realize that the TX-SR804 is built on Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology. WRAT provides a sound amplification framework that combines a high instantaneous current capability with a distortion-preventing circuit design to channel power for the demanding sound requirements of today's high-definition movie sources.Simplicity might not be a word that you associate with an A/V receiver of thisi class, but with HDMI, that perception quickly changes. HDMI is not only the most technologically advanced transport available for delivering movies, music, and gaming, it's also the most straightforward. Virtually any componant can be connected to the TX-SR804, upconverted, and outputted via a single HDMI cable. Just what you need to complement your HD-ready display.

Key technology Features:

HDMI: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what’s needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.

THX Select 2: THX Select2 certified receivers deliver optimal quality audio and video presentations to small and medium sized home theaters. A viewing distance of approximately 10 feet / 3 meters from the display to the listening position is best served by these specifications, which translates to a 2,000 cubic foot room. Based on the same values and principles of THX Ultra2, THX Select2 certified receivers deliver exceptional quality to smaller home theater environments. THX Select2 specifications are designed to address the growing needs of the newest generation of home entertainment enthusiasts - those who crave immersive DVD, music, and video game experiences, but do not have the space for a dedicated home theater.

DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6:
There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There’s also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the "96/24" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).

Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic IIx: Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX. By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result - a fuller 360º experience is created…even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic IIx is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic and subsequent Pro-Logic II standards. Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio.

Video Upconversion: Converts incoming composite, S-Video signals (like a VCR to S-Video equipped TV), and component signals all the way to HDMI on most models.

VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s.

Powered Zone 2: By dedicating a pair of channels on receivers with this capability, you don’t need an external amplifier to enjoy an independent stereo audio source in a remote room. For example, on higher-end models this allows for a full 5.1 channel movie to be enjoyed in the home theater, while simultaneously sending a song from a CD (or other source) to speakers in another room.

7.1 Multichannel Inputs: The emergence of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs promises to bring unparalleled realism to home theater. Dolby and DTS have each developed improved audio formats to be encoded on these new DVD discs that will superbly complement the latest in highdefinition video. By connecting a player compatible with these new audio codecs to an Onkyo A/V receiver equipped with 7.1 multichannel inputs, you will be able to experience extreme sonic clarity from these new discs, while retaining the full use of the receiver’s other onboard codecs.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I purchased this receiver a while back after months of searching for a receiver that would fit all of my digital needs, and a receiver that would not be obsolete in six months. Let me tell you, this receiver rocks and am I ever glad that I made the decision to purchase the Onkyo TX-SR804 7.1 Channel Up-Converting THX Certified A/V Receiver!First off the price is hard to beat for all that you get what with the HDMI,upconverting, 1080p video, and hdmi upconversion! This unit is a real steal at this price!
I have this receiver connected to all seven channels using my 5.1 surround sound speakers from a Kenwood all in one box surround sound system that I had purchased about 5 years ago! I just added two bigger sized speakers to act as my front left and right speakers, and just moved the old front speakers to the sides, and moved the old side speakers to the rear, and kept the old center speaker and subwoofer to complete the seven speaker array! Boy does this receiver ever sound good. With the THX modes and all of the other choices of sound modes to choose from, you can spend days going through them all trying to figure out which ones sound the best! The HD video quality is just as good as when I had the satellite box connected directly to the television! This receiver will definetly satisfy all of your audio-video needs!!

Customer Review 1 : Plenty of power, crystal clear sound, great features, great price - Average Joe -
For the price, I think the Onkyo TX-SR804S is a great piece of equipment. I use it in a home theater that doubles part-time as a family room for watching TV. The video upconversion and numerous inputs allow me to connect every piece of video and audio equipment I use into the receiver so that I only need only connection to the TV. The sound is crystal clear throughout all volume levels I have tried so far, and there are adequate adjustments for getting exactly the sound I want. The only strange thing I've noticed about the receiver is an occasional faint clicking sound like a relay switching poles. I don't know if this is an electrical discharge of some sort or what, but the sound is unnoticeable except at very low volume levels, and only happens occasionally. There seems to be no interruption to the video and audio produced by the unit.

Onkyo TX-NR1007 - AV network receiver - Pandora, Rhapsody, vTuner, Sirius internet radio - 9.2 channel - black Overviews

As Onkyo's first ever 9.2-channel receiver, the TX-NR1007 combines network capability and advanced A/V processing with a myriad of surround sound speaker possibilities. For instance, you can use Audyssey DSX or Dolby Pro Logic IIz to create an expanded, more immersive 9-channel sound stage for games and movies. Alternatively, you can supplement one of several different 7.2-channel set-ups in your main room with 2-channel sound in a second room. Along with the assurance of THX Ultra2 Plus certification, the TX-NR1007 brings greater convergence to your home entertainment. Audio files from a networked PC or streaming Internet radio can be fed to the receiver, and then processed and output with customary Onkyo power and fidelity. Audyssey MultiEQ XT ensures a well-balanced, room-matching speaker set-up, while ISF video calibration and 1080p upscaling via Faroudja DCDi Cinema work to get the most out of your video sources. Merely cherry-picking the specs, though, doesn't do justice to this mighty receiver - Onkyo suggests giving it an audition and letting your own eyes and ears be the judge.
