Onkyo TX-SR502S 6.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver - SILVER Specifications

Deliver an amazing number of features and a stunning degree of quality for its affordable price, Onkyo's TX-SR502 6.1-channel surround receiver is ideal for home theater novices as well as budget-conscious veterans planning an upgrade from 5.1 to 6.1. Those new to home theater will sigh in relief at the receiver's user-friendly design, which features color-coded inputs and outputs, a logically laid-out front panel, and an easy-to-use, preprogrammed remote control.

Those looking to upgrade their current home theater receiver will be impressed with the receiver's six, high-current channels (75 watts per channel) and processing for all major surround formats, and then some, including Dolby Digital EX (6.1), Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and a range of high-quality DTS formats like DTS 96/24.

Further, Onkyo includes a number of exclusive audio-enhancing features and technologies, like discrete output stages, a reduced-NFB (negative feedback) design, and CinemaFILTER (to yield the smoothest sound at any volume). Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) gives the power stage a linear frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz to ensure it’s up to the challenge of the most demanding audio sources, such as SACD and DVD-Audio.

The unit's fluorescent dot-matrix display speeds and simplifies setup and operation, including variable speaker configuration and distance settings for simple optimization of any speaker arrangement. With the adjustable crossover on the subwoofer's pre-out channel (new to this model), you can set the upper limit of the LFE signal at 60, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz for seamless integration of any satellite and subwoofer combination.

The TX-SR502 handles a range of audio and video components, from front-panel audio/video/S-video jacks for simple hookups with camcorders, game consoles, and VCRs (4 AV/S inputs total), to multiple rear-panel connections, including 2 HDTV-capable component-video inputs with 50 MHz bandwidth, a VCR input, inputs for a CD player and audio recorder (CD, minidisc, cassette, etc.), a set of multichannel RCA analog inputs (perfect for use with a DVD-Audio or SACD player's high-resolution analog outputs), and a quartet of assignable digital-audio ins (3 optical, 1 coaxial) for DVD players, a satellite receiver, a DVD player, and other gear.

Routing your DVD player's and VCR's audio and video signals to the receiver before sending them on to your TV simplifies AV source switching, since you can do it all with the receiver's remote rather than having to switch inputs on your receiver and your television.

Customer Review

Best Customer Review : I got this receiver for christmas, and I must say, it is great!! I got it as an upgrade over a JVC 6020v (100w x 5), and this Onkyo's 75 high current amps blow the JVC away! I was debating whether to get this or the Sony STR-DE697, and with features, the Sony had it won. Then came the sound quality test. Onkyo all the way!!!

Setup was easy, other than me cutting my Monster Cable for the surrounds too short (my fault). This receiver has a wide array of inputs, as well as four digital inputs, 3 TOSLink and 1 S/PDIF. What I like about the input selection is that you can assign the digital inputs to any of the a/v inputs, or one of them to all of the analog inputs. Very versatile inputs. Also has 4 A/V ins (all composite and S-video), 2 A/V outs (also composite and S-vid), and two audio-only inputs (one is a tape loop). Also to my liking in the input/output department, this receiver has 2 in, 1 out component vid connections.

Sound quality is incredible thanks to the powerful 75x6 high-current discrete amps Onkyo uses. Processing is average, with a 24bit processor, Dolby PLIIx, DTS NEO6, and a unique prepossessing unit called Cinema Filter. Cinema Filter (not a DSP) takes some of the edgy highs and disperses them (in other words, gets rid of the "fingers on chalkboard" effect). It also adds a subtitle "echo" effect, similar of that you get at the theater. DSPs are average.

Finetuning is easy, thanks to Onkyo's management. Each channel has a 24db trim capability (12db high, 12 db low, including your sub) Bass and treble controls are also 12db+, 12db-. Speaker distance goes 30 ft.

Drawbacks too this product is it's remote. I have heard alot of complaints about how big it is, but my biggest complaint is that I can't access my Dish Network guide, even though the remote has a button marked "guide".

Other than that, its a great receiver. It sounds clear and powerful even with my mismatched speakers (Fronts: JBL N24II; Center/rears: Teac; Surround back: Cambridge SonudWorks MC50; Sub: KLH Tremor125, with a 125 rms amp and a Lightning Audio 10" driver)

You will not be disappointed with this receiver.

Edit: two and a half years since I've had this, still sounds very strong and I've never had a problem. If you ever come across one used for a good price, grab it. I haven't heard the newer versions of this, though.
